Mulan

Mulan is a loyal and loving daughter with a strong spirit that can often get her into mischief. As beautiful as the most delicate blossom, yet tough and determined, Mulan has trouble accepting the traditions of a society that expects her to act as a woman is expected to. She tries to be gentle and graceful like the other girls but her strong nature risks bringing dishonour to the family that she loves so much.

One-day news comes through that the Huns have invaded China; by order of the emperor, one man from every household must fight in the imperial army. Mulan's father has no choice but to volunteer because he is the only male. Mulan is deeply upset because her father is old and she fears he will not survive.

That night while her family is asleep, Mulan takes her father's conscription notice, sword and armour, vowing to take his place in the war so that he will not have to go. She disguises herself as a man and rides away with her horse Khan and dragon friend Mishu. Mulan is taking a great risk because it against the law for a woman to join the army and that if she is caught she will be severely punished.

Mulan is a brave and clever soldier; she helps her army to defeat the Huns in battle and is injured while saving the life of her captain. Her real identity is discovered while she is being treated. As a reward for saving his life, the captain spares Mulan punishment but expels her from the army. Before she has time to leave the Huns make a surprise attack and kidnap the Emperor.

With Mulan's help the Emperor is saved and peace is restored once again. She is hailed as a hero by cheering crowds. This time Mulan is allowed to return home and take honour back to her family. Her parents are waiting for their brave daughter to return, and are overjoyed when they finally see her again.

Mulan's wardrobe

When not fighting the Huns in her father's armour, Mulan' favourite outfit is a rose-pink long-sleeved oriental satin dress with cuffs and ruffle collar. This look is completed with earrings and a red ribbon in her hair.

Origins of Mulan

The story of Mulan is based upon the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, which can be traced back to The Ballard of Mulan, a famous poem. The original story also depicts a young woman disguising herself as a man to her fathers place in battle. The name Mulan refers to a beautiful flower, 'Mu' means wood and 'Lan' means orchid.
